  1. Ethnic Profiling. For an examination on the research and legal issues on this topic, see Michael R. Smith and Geoffrey P. Alpert, "Searching for Direction: Courts, Social Science, and the Adjudication of Racial Profiling Claims," Justice Quarterly 19 (Dec. 2002): 673-703; Richard J. Lundman and Robert L. Kaufman, "Driving While Black: Effects of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender on Citizen Self-Reports of Traffic Stops and Police Actions," Criminology 41 (2003): 195-220; Roger Dunham and Geoffrey Alpert, "Prejudice in Police Profiling: Assessing an Overlooked Aspect in Prior Research," American Behavioral Scientist 47 (March 2004): 896-909.

  2. Mirandav. Arizona. In 1998, The New York Times published two excellent articles describing how police tactics have chipped away at suspects' rights. See: The New York Times, March 29, 1998, pp. 1, 40; The New York Times, March 30, 1998, pp. A1, B4.

  3. DNA Fingerprinting. For those of you who wish to better understand the intricacies of DNA, genes, and chromosomes, the U.S. Department of Energy has published an excellent report entitled Primer on Molecular Genetics. It is also on the Web. See http://www.ornl.gov/hgmis.

  4. Search and Seizure. Two classic works on search and seizure include J. Shane Creamer, The Law of Arrest, Search, and Seizure (New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1980), and Henry J. Abraham, Freedom and the Court: Civil Rights and Liberties in the United States (New York: Oxford University Press, 1977). In addition, issues in search and seizure are continually being examined by state and federal courts. The Bureau of National Affairs in Washington, DC, publishes summaries of all major state and federal cases on a weekly basis in a document called the Criminal Law Reporter. It is available in most law libraries.

  5. The Protective Sweep Doctrine. A comprehensive work on this topic is Gary Kelder and Alan J. Statman, "The Protective Sweep Doctrine: Recurrent Questions Regarding the Propriety of Searches Conducted Contemporaneously with an Arrest on or Near Private Premises," Syracuse Law Review 30 (1979): 973-1092.
