The first novels which emerged during the Age of Reason were written by authors like Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding. Richardson’s novels are in the form of letters and revolve around the battles for a woman’s virtue, establishing a conflict between the woman and her would-be-seducer. Fielding’s writing is more satirical in nature. Conflict, whether internal or external, is an important plot device in literature.
