Charles Rex Arbogast, Associated Press

Covering a major News Event

The reporter shows us the joyful return of hostages and lets us hear the roar of the tornado as it passes through a Midwestern town. The reporter takes us to the tense courtroom of a murder trial and into the field house where basketball rivals meet.

The reporter serves as our eyes and ears, looking carefully and listening closely in order to provide a complete and reliable account of the day's activities.

Sometimes these accounts provide us with the information we need to make important decisions, and sometimes the stories the reporter tells are designed for our entertainment. In both cases, the reporter makes a determined effort to gather relevant detail and to write clearly and accurately.
