     One of the prevailing stories—whether around the campfire of primitive tribes or on tonight's TV news—is the description of death and injury. These stories range from the accidents that affect a few to the disasters that nature inflicts on many.

     These photographs of the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd show the consequences of disasters: rescue efforts and the despoiling of the land. Volunteers load donated supplies at the North Carolina Fairgrounds for a massive relief effort. In the wake of the flood, pollution from landfills, hog waste lagoons, hazardous waste sites and junkyards caused millions of dollars in damages.
