What's New?

  • New readings have been added throughout the main text and the workbook. These readings are intended as either models of particular types of writing or as springboards for discussion and analysis. Whenever possible, these texts were selected based on the inclusion of current cultural information associated with the Hispanic world.
  • New exercises based on the new readings have been added throughout the first five chapters of the text and throughout the workbook.
  • The workbook has been streamlined by deleting the Páginas personales sections at the end of each chapter. Instead of jotting down writing ideas in the workbook, students are encouraged to use a separate personal notepad (libreta) in which to keep track of the writing topics, notes, and drafts that emerge from textbook exercises.
  • The Rincón del escritor found here on the website also includes new readings and updated how-to hints and suggestions about the writing process in Spanish.
  • Also new to the Fifth Edition is the Tabla de lecturas in Apéndice D of the main text. This list includes every reading in the main text, the workbook, and the Rincón del escritor, organized by chapter.
  • Writing exercises focus students on the needs of the reader and help them develop a repertoire of writing techniques, including peer-editing skills.
  • Structure of each chapter models the stages of the writing process and helps to ensure that students will have done significant thinking about their topic and their reader before they begin to write.
  • Models of different kinds of writing are provided, as well as models of how to analyze each. Models are not pitched too far over the heads of most students; rather, they are similar to what students themselves can write.
  • The Workbook helps students expand and refine a number of writing tools (control of grammar, range of vocabulary, rhetorical techniques for organizing information) as well as strategies for getting started. Students can check many of their own answers in an answer appendix.
