The Application of Endocrinology to Selected Animals and Humans

Chapter Summary

A remarkable homeostatic interrelation exists between hormones and other factors affecting animal health (including appetite, diet, nutrition, stress, and environmental responses). Caution should be taken with hormone supplements to avoid disturbing the hormonal balance. As noted by Brody, the following quotation is an excellent summary of this balance concept.

The most important concept in endocrinology which emerges from the feverish activity of the past decade is the principle of endocrine balance. Discovered and rediscovered by several investigators, the paradoxical truth has dawned finally that man or beast may suffer less from the loss of several glands than from losing a single one. For each of the precious juices the other secretions supply a partial antidote, so that health and personality may be preserved, delicately poised. Henceforth, the practicing consultant and laboratory investigator, or both, must think in terms of integrated hormonal effects.
