Principles of Nutrition: Plant and Animal Composition

Chapter Summary

An understanding of the deep-seated principles of nutrition is important because humans and animals are dependent on food nutrients for the processes of life. We have attempted to present the basic fundamentals of animal nutrition, giving special emphasis to the composition of plants and animals. A classification of food nutrients was presented in tabular form. Methods of analyzing foods, means of expressing their energy, and uses of food nutrients were discussed.

Much remains to be learned about the nutrient requirements of farm mammals and poultry. Many feeding standards were established early in the twentieth century before recent selection techniques provided humans with a means of developing animals that possess greater inherent producing ability. Significant advances in animal and human nutrition will be forthcoming as humans learn how to better utilize the animals that serve them.
