Research is rapidly accumulating regarding the significance of minerals in animal nutrition. The need of an adequate and balanced supply to ensure good health and performance of farm animals is of special interest. Certain elements are needed in small amounts but are toxic to animals in larger quantities.
Some essential mineral elements are stored in considerable quantities within the body during periods of adequate intake. These stores are drawn on later to meet requirements during periods of shortage. Other minerals must be supplied regularly because storage in the body is limited. Life cannot exist without mineral matter because many of the important body functions depend on mineral compounds.
