Qualities of Successful Marriages

Chapter Overview

A successful marriage is durable, approximates a couple's ideals or fulfills their reasonable expectations and mutual needs, and is satisfying. Twelve characteristics of successful marriages include commitment; honesty, trust, and fidelity; responsibility; adaptability, flexibility, and tolerance; unselfishness; communication; empathy and sensitivity; admiration and respect; affection; companionship; ability to deal with crises and stress; and spirituality and values. Congruence between marital expectations and accomplishment influences marital satisfaction, although definitions of each vary by couple.
