affective sensitivity  Empathy, or the ability to identify with the feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of another person.
balanced couples  Couples who have some disagreements but are generally satisfied with both internal and external couple issues.
conflicted couples  Couples in which the partners are constantly fighting.
devitalized couples  Couples in which the partners once had a satisfying relationship but who have since become unhappy with all aspects of the marriage.
financially focused couples  Couples in which the partners are involved in only one aspect of the marriage: money management.
harmonious couples  Couples in which the partners have an intimate relationship and get along well together.
negative affect reciprocity  A pattern of communication in unhappy couples whereby partners respond negatively to each other's statements.
noncontingent reinforcement  Unconditional approval of another person.
selfism  A personal value system that emphasizes that the way to find happiness is through self-gratification and narcissism.
traditional couples  Couples in which the partners have problems with internal issues but draw satisfaction from external sources and maintain a stable marriage.
unconditional positive regard  Acceptance of another person as he or she is.
vitalized couples  Couples with a high degree of satisfaction with all aspects of marriage.
