Teams are cooperative groups. Teambuilding provides the structure for teams: clear, challenging, and cooperative goals; clear roles; use of the Standard Agenda; consensus decision-making whenever possible; and team training. Teamwork is competent communication in the context of teams. Teamwork often requires creative problem solving. There are three structured methods of creative problem solving: brainstorming, nominal group technique, and reframing. Groupthink is poor teamwork in action. Groupthink occurs when team members place too much emphasis on cohesiveness and concurrence. Finally, small groups sometimes become large organizations. Organizations have a formal structure that is traditionally hierarchical. Recent efforts to flatten organizational hierarchies have produced increasing numbers of self-managed teams. These teams are empowerment in action.
