How a speaker presents a speech can be as important as the substance of the speech. Three aspects of speech presentation were discussed in this chapter: using supporting materials effectively, developing an appropriate and effective style, and developing a competent delivery. The three primary supporting materials are examples, statistics, and testimony. Each can be made effective by following the guidelines provided. Effective and appropriate style should meet three standards: clarity, precision, and vividness. Finally, there are common problems of delivery that become more frequent with some methods of delivery and less frequent with others. The four main methods of delivery are manuscript, memorized, impromptu, and extemporaneous speaking. Most common problems of delivery occur with manuscript, memorized, and impromptu speeches. Extemporaneous speaking has many important advantages compared to the other three methods of delivery.
