The theater world of Elizabethan times was in many ways comparable to modern Hollywood, with a similar atmosphere of greed, scandal, and especially sex. Popular playhouses were often bordered by brothels, and for many Londoners a night at the theater was as much about finding someone to spend the night with as it was about attending a play (Riggs 192). Controversy and rumor surrounded theatrical artists just as they now swirl around popular movie stars. Christopher Marlowe, for example, was murdered by government agents while awaiting trial for blasphemy (Damrosch, Jordan, and Carroll 1123).
