Learning Objectives


This chapter will describe the six main uses of the comma:

  • to separate items in a series
  • to set off introductory material
  • on both sides of words that interrupt the flow of thought in a sentence
  • between two complete thoughts connected by and, for, or, nor, so, yet
  • to set a direct quotation off from the rest of a sentence
  • for certain everyday material
