Chapter Overview

This chapter discusses the different types of soils and the microorganisms associated with them. The interactions of microorganisms with plants are discussed, as are the impacts of these interactions on soil fertility and the atmosphere. Other topics discussed include the roles of microorganisms in plant decomposition, in the subsurface biosphere, and in human health. The chapter concludes with a brief look at our current limitations in understanding microbial diversity in soils.
