Normal Microbiota and Nonspecific Host Resistance
Web Exercise
1. Use the Internet to find information so that you can create a list of symbionts
that interact with the human host. In an adjacent column, indicate whether the
symbiont is commensal, mutualistic or parasitic. In a final column, indicate under
what conditions the symbiotic relationship changes (for example, a commensal becomes
a parasite, a parasite dies, etc.).
2. When a baby is born, it contains relatively few, if any, microorganisms.
How does the development of normal microflora take place? Search the web for
an answer. 3. The macrophage is the most important cell in innate immunity. Go to the
macrophage home page at http://www.path.ox.ac.uk/sg
to learn more about the extensive working and activities of these phagocytic
cells.
