Equality of Educational Opportunity: Race, Gender, and Special Needs

Internet Exercises

1. Think about your educational experiences. Can you think of a time when you experienced or witnessed gender bias? Why do you think this occurred? As a teacher, how will you ensure that your educational practices are not gender biased?

2. Search the Internet for anti-racist and anti-bias curriculums. A good starting place might be the Teaching Tolerance website (http://www.splcenter.org/teachingtolerance/tt-index.html).
Select one and review it. In your opinion, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum you reviewed? Would you use this curriculum in your classroom? Why or why not?
