Internet Exercises

1. Search the Internet for information about the accountability movement. You might also look at educational reforms based upon accountability and high-stakes testing, such as in Georgia, North Carolina, Florida and Texas. On the basis of what you have learned in this course and from the information you found about accountability, what are the strengths and weaknesses of accountability plans? Do you think they will lead to equal educational opportunities for all children? Why or why not?

2. How was the federal government’s response to recent incidences of school violence impacted by the race and social class of the communities involved? Why do you think violent acts against minorities and gay, lesbian and bisexual youth are overlooked and ignored?
