Selecting Topic, Purpose, and Central Idea
Internet Exercises- Find and print a list of topics that are narrowed down from a general
category (for example, a list of cars under the heading "Automobiles").
For one of the topics that you find, write out at least three subtopics that
narrow the subject even further.
Possible Strategy: Go to www.yahoo.com, click on "Society and
Culture," and then "Issues and Causes." Select one or more
of the categories to see a list of topics. - Find and print a list of topics that would be suitable for a classroom
speech. Circle five of the topics and rank them from most interesting (rated
"1") to least interesting (rated "5").
