Internet Exercises

The Speaker and the Audience

Exercise 1 Subject: Search an online database for a topic

Having trouble finding a good speech topic? If so, this site will definitely help you. Take your web-browser to www.speechgems.com and browse the "site tour" link. Unfortunately, if you want to continue using this service it will cost $25 a year. There are many pay-per-topic sites available online to help you.

Exercise 2 Subject: Considering a speechwriter?

At some point in our lives, we will all have to give a public presentation. Some people prefer using speechwriters. Of course, these are pay-per-use services, which charge anywhere from $25 on up.

Go to www.speechwriters.com and browse their site.

Do you think that services like this help or hurt the speaker? Do they help or hurt the effective delivery of information?

Exercise 3 Subject: Usenet as a resource

Our textbook discusses Usenet, or online newsgroups, as a resource for topic selection and narrowing. Your final assignment for chapter fourteen is to visit www.usenet.com to search for a topic of interest.

Briefly describe your experience using Usenet.
