Recently, peoples faith in our criminal justice system has shaken and it is now time to reexamine. At one time, most people have thought that our courts were almost infallible--at least in terms of convicting the guilty. They believed that innocent people do not go to jail. (Although everyone admitted that guilty people sometimes are set free.) However, events over the past few year have eroded our confidence in our system of justice. First, there was O.J. Simpson trial, which has showed that both lawyers and prosecutors were more interested in manipulating law than in finding the truth. Then, there were several well-publicized cases in which advances in forensic science such as DNA testing have proved that some people who had sentenced to death were actually innocent. These cases were so disturbed to the governor of Illinois that he suspended the death penalty in his state until an investigation completed. We should all follow Illinois' lead and start a national dialogue on reforming our criminal justice system.
