________1________ Skinny, shy, and awkward, teenaged Bill Gates seemed an unlikely successor to his very successful parents.

1		While he showed enormous talent for math and logic, young Bill was no one's idea of a future billionaire who would reinvent American business.
2		His father was a well-known Seattle attorney, and his popular mother served on many charitable boards.
3		Still shy and awkward, he never went to parties without his friend Steve Ballmer, whom he later repaid by naming him president of Microsoft.
4		One day in December, 1974, Paul Allen, a friend of Gates, showed him a picture of a $397 computer from M.I.T.S. Computing that any hobbyist could build.
5		Gates and Allen contacted the head of M.I.T.S. and said they could provide software for the computer, and thus Microsoft was born.
6		Gates set off for Harvard University planning to become a lawyer like his father.
7		The only thing the computer lacked, besides a keyboard and monitor, was software.
8		In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to work full-time on his new company.
