At the heart of any survey study is its sample. However, as you have seen, samples come in different shapes and sizes. The three types of samples discussed in this chapter are the: (1) simple random sample, (2) stratified random sample, and (3) convenience sample. Each of the following sample descriptions illustrates a different type of sample. Match the three sample types with the three sample descriptions.

A total of 60 patients in a psychiatric hospital are selected for a survey about hospital treatment. Equal numbers (20) of patients are selected from three different categories defined by length of stay in the hospital. Selection from these three categories is done in such a way that each individual in each category has an equal chance of being selected.

Psychologists attending a convention are asked as they enter the convention hall whether or not they belong to more than one national psychology association.
