BASIC  Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, one of the most commonly used high-level programming languages.
Computer-assisted instruction (CAI)  Use of the computer as an instructional tool.
Computer-managed instruction (CMI)  A computerized record-keeping system that diagnoses a student's progress, provides instruction, and analyzes progress.
Drill and Practice  A type of computer instruction that lets students practice information with which they are familiar in order to become proficient.
Freeware  Software that is given away at no charge.
Integrated learning system (ILS)  A central computer with software consisting of planned lessons in various curriculum areas.
Public domain software  Software that is not copyrighted and can be freely copied and distributed without payment or permission.
Shareware  Copyrighted software that is distributed free but must be paid for if the customer is satisfied.
Simulation  Software that approximates the conditions of the real world in an environment in which the user changes the variables.
Site licensing  A software licensing system in which a person or organization pays a set fee to run copies of a program on a large number of computers.
Tutorial  Similar to a tutor, a program that explains new material and then tests the student's progress.
