About the AuthorsBORDEN D. DENT, above all, was three things—a geographer, a cartographer, and an educator. His geography training spawned an interest in cartography, which he conceptualized as a manner to richly visualize the world we live in.
Born in Arkansas, Dr. Dent attended elementary and high school in Maryland. He earned
his B.A. and M.A. in Geography from Towson State University and the University of California at
Berkeley, respectively. He received his Ph.D. from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he specialized in thematic cartography.
Dr. Dent published articles on cartography and geography in professional journals, including the Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The American Cartographer, The Cartographic Journal, and The Journal of Geography. He presented papers at professional meetings, the National Geographic Society, the U.S. Census Bureau, and at several universities. He designed maps for The Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States, a project directed at Emory University and funded by the National Endowment
for the Humanities.
Dr. Dent authored five editions of Cartography: Thematic Map Design and served as chair of the Department of Anthropology and Geography at Georgia State University. His
