Exercise 1: What a difference! Some magazines publish in more than one locale. Time Magazine, for example,
also has an Asian version with different stories and different perspectives
than the magazine that you might know as Time. Find both Time and Time Asia
online. Compare and contrast the language used in similar stories. What differences
do you detect? Do you feel differently about the story after you have read the
second version? Exercise 2: Figures of speech At one time, people memorized multiple figures of speech and used them to analyze
speeches and compositions. Today, with the exception of commonly known figures
of speech such as metaphors and irony, few students know very much about figures
of speech. Use the Internet to find the name and definition of at least six
figures of speech. Suggest how you could use figures of speech in your oral
or written communication with others. Should communication instructors spend
more time on figures of speech in the classroom? |
