Socialism is a kind of economic system that is very different from capitalism. By and large, the United States is a capitalist country. But should we forge economic and political policies that are more socialist in nature? The Socialist Party of America thinks that we should. Visit their website at sp-usa.org to find out why.

  1. What were the goals of the Socialist Party when it first formed at the start of the 20th century?
  2. Are you surprised that the Socialist Party elected two people to Congress in its early history? Why or why not?

  1. How are the goals of the Socialist Party different than in its early history? Why do you think these goals have changed?
  2. Which goals of the Socialist Party do you agree with? Which goals of the Socialist Party do you disagree with?
  3. What is the view of the Socialist Party on U.S. military intervention in other countries?
