In Reel Society you learn about some of the ideas on religion developed by Émile Durkheim and Max Weber. For Durkheim, religion is an integrative force in society. For Weber, religion can be a major source of social change. Has the development of the Internet altered any of the key roles of religion? Visit the on-line magazine Cybersociology at www.cybersociology.com/ to see one perspective on this question.

Link to Issue Seven at the bottom of the page, and then to the article titled "Cyberspace: the New Frontier for Religion." Read the article and answer these questions:
  1. What would Durkheim have to say about religion in cyberspace? Does religion in cyberspace still bring dissimilar people together? Would he alter any of his ideas, based on this article?
  2. What would Weber have to say about religion in cyberspace? Would he alter any of his ideas, based on this article?
  3. Why do you think that there are so many web pages with religious themes?
  4. Do religious websites seem to appeal to particular kinds of people? If so, would Durkheim or Weber have any comment on these patterns?
  5. Can you see any ways in which traditional religious gatherings might work more or less effectively than the Internet as tools for worship?
