The functionalist and conflict perspectives on education offer different views of the kinds of skills and habits to which the educational system inculcates American children. For functionalists, it is useful to teach children about punctuality, scheduling, and hierarchy, since being conversant in these skills will benefit them as working adults. For conflict theorists, these teachings represent a hidden curriculum in schools that can stifle creativity and hinder the learning process.
