Whether or not government should allow school vouchers—a type of faith-based initiative—is very controversial. Some of the groups against school vouchers and other faith-based initiatives are non-Christian religious organizations. The ADL (Anti-Defamation League), a Jewish organization, takes a firm stand against school vouchers. Read an article at their website (www.adl.org/vouchers/vouchers_main.asp) to find out why.

Answer the following questions about the article you read, "School Vouchers: The Wrong Choice for Public Education."
  1. What is the typical monetary value of a school voucher? What proportion of school vouchers do parents use for religious schools, according to the ADL?
  2. How do school vouchers violate the separation of church and state, according to the ADL?
  3. What are the implications for public schools when governments implement school voucher programs?
  4. According to the article, do school vouchers allow poor families to send their children to private schools?
  5. Are there racial differences in support for school voucher programs? Why do you think this is the case?
