Reel Society shows that family life varies across social classes, races, and ethnic groups. This was as true in the past as it is today, and for this reason people who wish to research their family roots may need to do so in different ways, depending upon their racial or ethnic group. AfriGeneas (www.afrigeneas.com/) is a website offering assistance to African Americans doing genealogical research.

Enter the site, and link to the Beginner's Guide under "getting started". Page through this presentation, and answer the following questions:
  1. Based on what you have read, how must African American families research their roots differently than White families?
  2. How is this related to racial variation in American family life?
  3. Based on what you see in this presentation, for what reasons is it important for African-American families to research their roots?
Return to the AgriGeneas home page by clicking on the "exit" link of the Beginner's Guide. Next, click on the link to Kohrville/Pilgrim Branch Cemetery in the lower right-hand corner of the page. Link to some of the names of the dead at the bottom of the page, and look at the photographs of their tombstones.
  1. Would you expect to see photographs of tombstones from White cemeteries of this era? What does this tell you about African-American family life at this time?
