Norms can vary a great deal across different social groups in the United States. Aish HaTorah (www.aish.com) is an international organization devoted to education about Judaism. Among other things, their website contains a trove of information about Jewish cultural norms. In order to learn about some of these norms, go to the HaTorah website, and click on the link to "Jewish literacy," and then "Jewish lifecycles." Read the article entitled "Naming Your Child," and answer the following questions.
  1. How are Jewish norms for naming children different from Christian norms?
  2. Why is it that, for Jews, a male child should not be named after his father?
  3. For Jews, what is the religious significance of naming a child?
Press your browser's back button, link to "Circum-Decision," and read the article there.
  1. Some Jews are questioning the Jewish tradition of circumcision. Which do you think is a more important, religious considerations, or the kinds of objections raised in this article?
  2. Before reading this article, were you aware of the deep religious significance of circumcision?
