As you read the newspaper, write down the names of ten social issues on separate pieces of paper, and place them in a bowl. Close your eyes and pick one of these pieces of paper. Write an essay in which you explain how a functionalist, a conflict theorist, and an interactionist would approach this issue.

Do you remember how the students in Reel Society discussed the media from the conflict, functionalist and interactionsit perspectives? Next time you get into a heated argument about some social issue, pay attention to how your friends, family members, or classmates discuss this issue, and whether they seem to approach it from a conflict, functionalist, or interactionist perspective. Write an essay in which you describe your conclusions. Do the socioeconomic traits of a person appear to influence the theoretical perspective they take? Based your analysis of a few arguments, do you think that one particular theoretical perspective is dominant within the American population?
