The geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky once commented, “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution”. This is quite true. Everything that we study in biology can best be explained in the terms of descent with modification. The wisdom teeth in a human’s jaw, the broad leaves of an oak tree, and the shared genes that almost all living organisms possess are only comprehensible in the principles described by Charles Darwin and other evolutionary biologists.
Current scientists are still using the principles of evolution to understand why microorganisms become resistant to antibiotics, why insects become resistant to pesticides, and how best to conserve endangered species through breeding programs.
