What's New

  • Expanded discussion of globalization and its importance to intercultural communication. For example, Chapter 1 discusses how globalization and related economic disparities influence intercultural communication; Chapter 8 expands the discussion of the impact of globalization on the continuing worldwide migration and the resulting intercultural encounters.
  • New material addressing the continuing and expanding influence of communication technology in our daily lives. Chapter 7 discusses virtual spaces (e.g. blogs), and expanded coverage of online intercultural relationships appears in Chapter 10.
  • New sections on the important roles that institutions play in intercultural contact. For example, in Chapter 8, the authors address the role of churches and government institutions like the INS in facilitating or discouraging cultural adaptation of immigrants. Similarly, in Chapter 10, they address the role of institutions in supporting or discouraging intercultural relationships; in Chapter 11, they examine how institutions can exacerbate or ameliorate intercultural conflict.
  • New "Student Voices" boxes in which students relate their own experiences and share their thoughts about various intercultural communication issues, as well as new "Point of View" boxes that present diverse viewpoints from news media, research studies, and other public forums.
  • Expanded discussion of the implications of religious identity. Chapters 5 and 11 reflect a continued awareness of the important role that religion plays in intercultural communication.
