A young woman told authorities that her two small boys had been kidnapped by a carjacker on an isolated country road. Sobbing and badly shaken, she described the carjacker as a black man wearing a cap. The woman, 23 years old and white, said the event occurred late in the evening.

Police artists drew up a sketch of the suspect based on the woman's description, and it was used in newspapers and television stations across the country.

Your newspaper recently ran a long story about a woman who claimed her daughter had been kidnapped while the child was waiting in her baby carriage as the mother stopped to buy a soft drink. The woman's claim turned out to be a hoax and she was arrested and charged with murder shortly after the child's body was discovered in a dumpster.
