On the Job

Introduction

Reporters are on the scene...from the helicopter overlooking a massive oil spill to the classroom where kindergartners are laboriously spelling out their names on the blackboard. They are in the press box covering the World Series and in the mayor's office asking about her new budget that requires an increase in the property tax.
With their notes in hand, reporters fashion stories that will inform and entertain readers, listeners and viewers. But first drafts are not always the best versions of what they have heard and seen. Nor do they conform to the Stylebook's demands for proper punctuation, correct abbreviations and dictionary spellings.
Reporters go over their stories line by line to make improvements and corrections. We begin this chapter with some editing work.
