Schools superintendent Herbert Gilkeyson said in a news release accompanying the scores:   It is clear from these scores that we have serious work to do. I am pleased by the improvement in the math scores, generally up 5 to 10 points in all income levels. But I am dismayed by the low verbal scores. Clearly, low-income students are spending study time working to help support families. The problem lies deep in our socio-economic stratification. |
