Introduction

The largest single department on most newspapers is the sports department and one of the fastest-growing broadcast stations is the all-sports, all-day radio station, a reflection of interest in spectator sports. The growth of big-time sports—collegiate as well as professional—has created an audience in almost every city for intense coverage of basketball, football and baseball. Even hockey has expanded to areas that have never seen an ice-covered pond.
Sports coverage is best when it is objective, when the reporter is not a home-team rooter. As television game coverage expands, newspaper accounts increasingly emphasize the game's turning points, strategy and after-the-game comments over a running account of scoring.
