The rate of interfaith marriages has steadily increased over the past three decades. About 40 percent of Catholics who marry each year do so outside their faith. The 1973 figure was 23 percent. Among Jews, the percentage of interfaith marriages increased from 30 percent to 52 percent over the past three decades.

  1. Make an Internet search to bring the figures up to date. What do commentators say about the consequences of this shift in marriage patterns?
  2. Conduct a campus survey: How much is religion a factor in campus dating? Talk to students and to the chaplains of student religious organizations.
  3. Use the material for a radio or television documentary.
