10.1 Children and Grief

When a family member dies, children react differently than adults. Review the article titled "Children and Grief" found by accessing the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's homepage. Scroll down to the AACAP Facts for Families and click on Children and Grief. Preschool children usually see death as temporary and reversible--a belief reinforced by cartoon characters who "die" and "come to life" again. Children between five and nine years of age begin to think more like adults about death, yet still believe it will never happen to them or anyone they know. When a child grieves, parents and other adults wonder what is "normal." After reading this advice prepared by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, describe six warning signs indicating that a child may need professional help. Explain why you think this sign is particularly troublesome.
