10.2 Support for Children with Life-Threatening Illnesses

Seriously ill children need a supportive environment, one that also can assist other members of their families. Although there are many community-based programs across the United States and Canada for bereaved children and their families, support services for seriously ill children are generally hospital based. One innovative community-based support program provides a range of services and education for the child and his or her family. Browse the website for Jacob's Heart. Click on About in the title bar and watch the videos posted under Mission. Respond to the following:

1
What was the initial intent of the founder?
2
How does the organization define its mission?
3
After reading the beliefs of the organization, name four that you particularly like and identify the one you think is most unique.
4
Describe how Jacob's Heart raises community awareness and provides education.
5
Access one of the recent stories by clicking on Families in the title bar and select Stories. Pick one of the ones you like and provide a summary of the information you find.
6
In your opinion, what is the most helpful service that this community-based organization provides for its families? Why do you find this service to be the most helpful?
