"Saving the Rain Forest"

Introduction
In this chapter, you have read about the various climate and vegetation zones around the world. One type of climate and vegetation is tropical rain forest. The Amazon rain forest is home to hundreds of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. However, the Amazon is in danger-every day it grows smaller as trees are cut to make room for roads and farmland, or to gain access to the resources contained within the rain forest. In this activity, you will visit the Rainforest Action Network to learn more about this endangered region and what you can do to help protect it.

Directions
Start at the Rainforest Action Network Web site.

• Click on the For Teachers and Students tab at the top of your screen.
• In the For Students column, look for Indigenous Peoples of the Rainforest and click on that. Read the information that appears.
• Click back to the For Teachers and Students screen. Then click on and read about Tropical Rainforest Animals.
• Return once more to the For Teachers and Students screen. Click on and read Seven Things You Can Do To Save The Rainforest.

1			How do children who live in the rain forest attend school?
2			Why is there such great diversity of animals in rain forests?
3			What are indigenous people doing to save their rainforest?
4			Describe some steps that you and your classmates can take to help protect the rain forest.
5			Using a poster board, create a poster to display in your classroom or in the hallway to encourage others to help save the rain forest. Include pictures or drawings, reasons why the rain forest is important, and ways that kids can help to protect it. You may use information from the Web site or conduct additional research if needed.
