Unit 6: Interactions of Matter

Unit Project 2

Project Type: Technology

Assign a specific salt to a pair of students. Using a variety of resources, have students research what elements are used to make their salt, how it is made, where it can be found, and where it is used. Some students may be interested in researching bath salts and their popularity in today’s society. Salt research suggestions might include:

Sodium chloride (NaCl),
Potassium chloride (KCl),
Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl),
Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4),
Sodium Sulfate (Na2SO4),
Potassium acetate (CH3CO2K),
Sodium nitrate (NaNO3)
Barium Sulfate (BaSO4)
Copper(II) acetate (Cu(CH3CO2))
Ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4).

Alternative Procedure:
Have students research salts in consumer products. Have students apply their research by creating a consumer decision-making study. The students will need to collect data that supports their consumer decision. The project should end with the students providing an oral presentation to the class.
