Have the student’s research microbial hydrocarbon bioremediation, which involves oil-eating microbes that have been biologically engineered for the specific use to clean up oil spills. Have students collect articles about these helpful organisms and other man-made solutions to human-made problems. Then, have the students write a factual newspaper article about the environmental problem and its solution.

Alternate Procedure:

Students may also write an editorial on the subject stating their opinion of the controversy.
