Chapter Seventeen focuses on the first half of the twentieth century and the three major "modern art" directions of expressionism, formalist abstraction, and surrealism. A wide range of painters, sculptors, architects, photographers, and filmmakers are included and coverage extends from the turn of the twentieth century to approximately World War II.
