About the Authors

Richard West is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Illinois State University, and his Ph.D. from Ohio University. Rich has been teaching since 1984, and his teaching and research interests range from family diversity to teacher-student communication. He began teaching communication theory as a graduate student and currently teaches the course in lecture format to more than 100 students. Rich is the recipient of various teaching and research awards at USM, including the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher-Scholar and the Faculty Senate Award in Communication Research. He is a past recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award in Communication at Illinois State University and Ohio University. He is also co-author (with Lynn Turner) of Gender and Communication and Perspectives on Family Communication. He dedicates this book to his golden retriever/ridgeback mix, Roger.

Lynn H. Turner is an associate professor in Communication Studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois--Chicago, her M.A. from the University of Iowa, and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. She teaches communication theory and research methods to first-year communication studies majors. Lynn began teaching at Marquette in 1985, and prior to that taught at Iowa State University. Her research interests include family communication and gender and communication. She is the recipient of several awards, including Marquette's College of Communication Research Excellence Award and the Book of the Year award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender for her book with Patricia Sullivan, From the Margins to the Center. She lives with her husband, Ted, and looks forward to visits from their children and grandchildren.
