Consider the opening story of the chapter. Reflecting on the information presented, respond to the following two questions and relate them to the chapter content.

1

Choose any two theorems of Uncertainty Reduction Theory and apply them to the story of Edie and Malcolm. How does Edie and Malcolm's behavior illustrate these theorems? Or do Edie and Malcolm violate the expectations of the theory? If you think the theory fails to explain what happens to Edie and Malcolm, does that invalidate the theory? Explain your position.
2

Use Edie and Malcolm's interaction to explain your position on the debate between Charles Berger and Michael Sunnafrank. Sunnafrank argues that predicted outcome values are more important than uncertainty reduction, while Berger responds that outcomes cannot be predicted without knowledge and reduced uncertainty about oneself, one's partner, and the relationship.
