About the Authors

Kenneth Tamarkin

Kenneth Tamarkin has worked in Adult Basic Education since 1972 as a teacher, administrator, staff developer, and writer. He has taught ABE, GED preparation, and office skills to adult learners. His publications include Contemporary’s Number Power 6: Word Problems, Breakthroughs in Social Studies, Contemporary's GED Social Studies (coauthored with Jeri Bayer), and Contemporary’s GED Social Studies Exercise Book (coauthored with Jeri Bayer).

Mr. Tamarkin has also been active in the Massachusetts Adult Literacy Technology Team (MALTT), helping to create the first Massachusetts ABE technology plan and currently working on the second. He also participated in writing the ABE math section of the first draft of the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks.

Mr. Tamarkin taught GED preparation and office skills at the Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE) for many years. He also taught GED preparation and computer skills at the Lawrence Worker Assistance Center and at the Workplace Education Program at Malden Mills in Lawrence. He currently works at the Northeast System of Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) as the Technology Coordinator for ABE programs in the northeast region of Massachusetts.


Jeri W. Bayer

Jeri W. Bayer has had a varied career as a teacher of GED preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and basic literacy. Her students have included factory workers, recent immigrants, and young people who have left high school before completion. In addition, she has served as a staff developer, training other teachers in curriculum and instructional design.

Currently, Ms. Bayer is a curriculum and assessment specialist in Massachusetts for the System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES). In this capacity she has written the state's adult curriculum framework for social studies and contributed to the framework for health. Her most recent project is a guide to help teachers integrate social studies content with basic skills development.
