Analyzing and Evaluating Science

Chapter Overview

Scientific knowledge advances because of careful analysis and evaluation of new scientific data—recorded results of observations and experiments. The goal of scientists is to think about this data with an open mind, being especially careful not to be overly influenced by personal beliefs or social pressures.

In this chapter you will learn about analyzing and evaluating science by studying the following topics:

  • distinguishing facts from hypotheses and opinions
  • recognizing unstated assumptions
  • identifying cause-and-effect relationships
  • drawing conclusions
  • judging the value and adequacy of information
  • recognizing the influence of values
  • using the scientific method
